When it all started, it was usually at nightfall and with
cars as instruments of escape. Now, insecurity in Nigeria has taken a
dangerously unacceptable toll as kidnappers and armed robbers now resort to
using the popular keke tricycles and in broad daylight, to carry out their
nefarious atrocities. What scares me most is that such crimes are usually
committed in the glaring sight of the public yet no body would dare raise alarm
nor alert the security agencies like the police.
This is no “dem say”, this is real.
It is happening all around you, you may have heard about one or two incidents
round your neighborhood and you think it is of no consequences. The life-saving
fact remains that anyone could be a victim – including you. Being alert and
security conscious is the only way out of this and what more, what could be
done to checkmate this ugly rising trend?
In my previous post, I explained how to identify safe Keketricycles in Nigeria using a four or five digit identification number inscribed
on the body of any genuine Keke tricycle. These numbers have been centrally
generated as a way to properly identify safe and secure keke tricycle operators
operating within defined localities in Nigeria.
Unfortunately, not even this measure has successfully
checkmated crimes being committed using keke tricycles. We have been getting
reports of series of kidnaps, armed banditry and other heinous crimes being
perpetrated by riders on keke tricycles. These were sometimes done singly or in
company of other supposed passengers who would later turn out to be criminal
collaborators.
HOW TO STAY SAFE AND
SECURED
Please be warned now that our keke tricycles are no longer
safe until they are certified safe by you.
Before you board any kek tricycle, please ensure that all passengers
looked normal and never give in to sitting in the middle when other passengers
arrived before you. If you hav e any instinct sensing trouble, please kindly
request to disembark even before the journey commences. While in transit, never
answer phone calls or engage in discussions that reveal things about you or
where you are going to. Never engage in open discussions with fellow but
unknown passengers, minding your business. Never allow the keke operator to
change course or route from the usual path in your journey, unless the reasons
are obvious.
Even when walking by the roadside, watch out for any keke
tricycle or car that may stop or pull by your side and walk away immediately.
Your personal security can best be ensured by you alone. Therefore, always assume
that you are not completely safe, this will help you stay alert but relaxed.
As a way to checkmate these incessant crimes committed using the
keke tricycle, it is hightime the authorities deviced a means to check the
authenticity of identification numbers inscribed on the body of the keke
tricycles. Anyone could manufacture similar numbers and operate with it without
being discovered. As keke tricycles have come to outnumber cars in use in
Nigeria, it calls for a wholistic approach towards ensuring the security of the
keke tricycle transport sub-sector and the Nigeria public in general. The time
to act is now!
