Despite the situating four notable federal institutions along
its axis, the government has allowed to become a death trap, the road
connecting Naze community to Nekede and then to Ihiagwa communities, all in
Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo state.
These four institutions of the federal government of Nigeria
along the Naze / Nekede / Ihiagwa road are – the Technology Incubation Centre (TIC)
Owerri of the National Board for Technology Incubation NBTI, the Federal
Polytechnic Nekede Owerri, the Nigeria Police Training School Nekede and the
Federal University of Technology Owerri.
Sadly, it has not yet been confirmed whether the forsaken
Naze – Nekede – Ihiagwa road actually belongs to the federal government of Nigeria or the state government of Imo state.
There is a complete presentation of total abandonement – the Nekede axis of the
road have been completely submerged in deep gullys, muddy and dangerous water
while the Ihiagwa axis has been completely cut off.
Commercial buses no longer ply such roads which has brought
untold hardship not only to the community and the general residents, but also
to the thousands of students of these higher federal institutions as well as their
management and staff. Even few bigger commercial buses that have persisted on
that road have tripled their transport fares – Owerri municipal to the federal
Polytechnic Nekede is now 200 NGN. Owerri town to FUTO is now 250 NGN. Even the
least distance along that road axis, which is from Owerri town to the TIC
Owerri is now 150 NGN as against 50 NGN which it was irrespective of where you
are going to along the road entire axis.
It is unbearable now! It is intolerable now! Whatever level
of government responsible for this Naze – Nekede – Ihiagwa road should do
something now as a matter of urgency. This road attracts the heaviest
commercial activity in the entire state. Even the new Naze market (former
Eke-Ukwu market), recently instituted by the Imo state government under Owelle
A|nayo Rochasa Okorocha, has added to the beehive of economic activities – both
human and material, going on on that road. Enough is enough!
It is not advisable to test the patience of the masses. Especially
now that the Nigeria’s general elections are round the corner, government
shgouldf do the needful – this time, construcvting a nylon-tarred and well
elevated road with deep and widse drainages to run all through the entire road
axis. Anything short of this would mean the usual harp-hazard works which some
supposed contractors usually do on that road virtually every year without any
lasting result.
Let whatever government responsible for that road use it to prove
to the people that it is actually working in the interest of the people of imo
state and the south-east in general. A word is enough for the wise! The pictures
are fully shown below.
