Breaking news from Ebonyi state, south-east Nigeria has it that a fresh outbreak of the dreaded lassa fever has claimed the lives of two resident medical doctors and a nurse at the Federal Teaching Hospital in the state capital Abakaliki. News has it that doctors, nurses, hospital staff and some patients were seen fleeing the Teaching Hospital as news of the Lassa fever deaths filled the air early hours of Monday 15th January 2018. It was also reported thast the two doctors and a nurse who died the previous day Sunday 14th, contacted the Lassa fever after treating a patient in the hospital.
Meanwhile, the Government of Ebonyi state has confirmed the demise of the two medical doctors and also the nurse. In a press briefing, the state commissioner for Health Dr Umezurike Daniel lamented that Ebonyi state has seriously suffered from epidemics such as Ebola, Lassa fever and recently Monkey Pox.
In his words, the Health Commissioner said "it is either Ebola outbreak, Lassa fever or Monkey Pox and this is most unfortunate" Meanwhile, the Ebonyi State Centre for Disease Control SCDC has officially confirmed the outbreak of Lassa fever in the State.
Lassa fever is a viral tdiseases known to be transmitted or propagated through rodents such as rats and also has a high fatality rate. that is, it easily kills its victim and it is highly contagious.
