Majority of fresh university graduates or graduates from
other higher institutions are faced with the confusing thought of either gunning
for a Masters Degree program or finding a job first. In our present day society
and with much demand from employers of labor, academic qualifications and self
development have been given high priority in employment decisions, appointments
and other job benefits. Therefore there is need for always add value to your
credentials whenever the opportunity presents itself.
However upon graduating from the tertiary institutions, there
are many factors to consider before deciding whether to hunt for a job, create
job for yourself or to proceed with acquiring a Masters degree immediately. You
are not expected to rush this decision because this stage of life goes a long
way to define your career path and your future.
In deciding whether to join the labor force (find a job or
create one for yourself), or to proceed on a Masters Degree program, here are
some factors you might need to consider;
FINANCE
Do you have the financial muscle to see yourself through the
Masters degree course? Alternatively, can your family or relations afford to
sponsor you through it? As long as you have access to funding for your academic
progress, then go for a higher degree (Masters). Otherwise, you might want to
consider getting yourself a job to enable you raise fund to further your
academics.
AVAILABILITY OF OPPORTUNITIES
It is wise to study and understand the times and seasons in
all that you do. Assuming you have that golden opportunity to join a
Multinational company or conglomerate immediately after school (maybe you have
been given an offer), do not turn it down because you feel like acquiring a
Masters degree before getting a job.
Accept the offer, and then while on the job, apply for a
study leave. You can always upgrade to a Masters Degree while still on the job.
Opportunity does not come every time thus, grab one when you see one.
BRAIN DRAIN
You would have realized that you could still recall easily
what you studied in school few years after graduation. However, it becomes more
disturbing to realize that with more years passing, you tend to forget what
concepts, laws you studied in school. Most fresh graduates would always want to
venture back into school for their Masters degree if given the opportunity,
just because they would not want to forget what they studied in the first
degree programs.
This is relatively okay. It is good to keep the brain alive
and active. However the truth remains that as long as you studied very well
during your first degree course, you would never forget it even after so many
years of graduating from the higher institutions.
For so many other socio-economic factors, you might also want
to consider your present age, family responsibilities and other realities of
life around you. I strongly advocate a career development to the fullest. Not just
in paper credentials, but also in skills, capabilities and practical
applications.
