Following sanctions from the World's Football governing body FIFA on the Nigeria Football Federation NFF for fielding an ineligible player during the Super Eagles' last World Cup Qualifier against Algeria, the NFF President Amaju Pinnick has declared that the mistake which resulted in the sanctions would be investigated and the erring staff sanctioned.
My problem with the NFF President's line of decision. is that he has failed to see his office as to be firstly blamed for whatever shame the NFF has brought upon Nigeria. Should anyone be punished for this act of negligence, it ought to be him first. This is for failing to ensure that every due diligence is supplied as well as the needful in effective administrative adherence to record checks and balances that would have made the NFF avoid such "Yellow Card Record Oversight".
How could it be said that the NFF failed to keep or work with records of yellow cards bagged by the Super Eagles during matches? Whether it was an act of commission or commission on the part of the NFF officials, the Head has to take responsibility. Even asPinnick has vowed to punish the erring official, he must realise that he too has failed. I call this an act of gross administrative negligence on the part of the entire NFF. Therefore if that erring official is to be berries, let the Presidency or Sports Minister query the office of the NFF President too. If the erring official would be sacked, then let the NFF President resign. This is the most Honorable thing to do in order to preserve the credibility of our football house as an institution.
It is not enough to apologise to Nigerians and then go ahead to punish the "expendable" while the policy makers and administrative pillars who were suppose to ensure proper due process, checks and balances in the institution go free.
Because the FIFA Sanction has not prevented Nigeria from going to the 2018 World Cu, many have failed to recognise the gravity of this sanctions and its effects to our national pride.
I long to see the day in Nigeria when the Chief Executive Officer CEO of a public institution would readily take responsibility and resign due to wrong doings within the institution's domain. This never happens in this country and that is why our institution's are dying with corruption, moral epilepsy and nepotism. They would always want to shift the blame.
