News has it that the Ekiti State government has advocated a law on death sentence for anyone caught in the act of cultism, kidnapping and other similar criminal acts. This law which is about to become fully effective after the normal legislative actions and executive accent will ensure that crimes of cultism, kidnapping, armed robbery and other vices are nipped in the bud. According to news, this is a move by the government of Ekiti State, western Nigeria to deal a final blow to the menace of cultism in higher institutions of learning, communities, and other levels of societies within the state as well as every form of kidnapping or hostage situations and other related crimes.

Giving to the high level of insecurity in different states of the Nigerian nation, questions are beginning to trail this development as to why other state governors would not follow this trend to curb these societal menace and unneccessary loss of lives as a result. In states such as Imo state, the level of cult activities and kidnap is ta an alarming proportion. Stories have been confirmed of how alledged cultists come out to rob, intimidate and in some cases maim or kill their victim at locations within Douglas Road and its environs in Owerri, the capital city of Imo state in Nigeria.

It is no longer news that Owerri in Imo state has been rendered largely a cultist zone and den of robbers who pounce on unsuspecting passers-by with every sense of bolding without recourse to the possible presence of the security agents - if at all there would be any. Imolites are groaning, the media have been reporting on this menace but until the time of this publication, it has remained business as usual. Why can't the Governor of Imo state Owelle Anayo Rochas Okorocha borrow this new law instituted in Ekiti state and ensure that it is enforced to the latter?

Imo State Security

A walk along these routes at Douglas Road abd environs would reveal the positioning of security patrol vans stationed strategically but how come thiese crimes have continued to be on the increase? The reason may not be far-fetched. When the police and men of the Imo Security Network ISN patrol occasionally with sirens blaring and men in full uniformed attire, you are only telling these miscreants to step aside for you to pass and continue after your passage. This is what I call "Cosmetic Security of lives and property".

Our security operatives have virtually forgotten that Intelligence and undercover operatios are most appropriate for this kind of criminal activities. A good example with a good number of these cultists and kidnappers rounded off by the Police and other security agents will send a clear message to the remaining bad elements that the environment is no longer conducive for them. But this is far from being the reality in Owerri as these cultists, armed robbers and kidnappers are having field day at Douglas Road in Owerri, Imo state. His Excellency Sir, Imolites are expectant.
