Millions of mobile phone users in Nigeria have been receiving SMSs asking them to immediately
regularize the registration of their phone lines or risk instant disconnection
and deactivation. Many more phone lines
have already been disconnected as a result of security challenges posed by
these unidentifiable phone numbers in Nigeria. This call to action was
engineered by the federal government of
Nigeria through all the security
agencies in collaboration with the Nigeria
Communication Commission NCC.
Earlier than now, it had been on the media that mobile phone network operators should
not sell pre-registered phone lines to users. This is against the backdrop of
crimes which may have been committed using these pre-registered lines and now
transferred to unsuspecting buyers. This may lead to mistaken identity in the
course of investigation and arrest.
Generally, owing to the present heavy security challenges facing the country, Nigeria has risen to the times. Not only in the clampdown on
pre-registered or partially registered phone lines, but also in the
introduction of a central identity database through the introduction of the new national identity card. The Federal
Government through the Nigeria Police
has also announced a radical clampdown against the indiscriminate use of unapproved sirens and tinted glass vehicles. Do I need to mention about the on-going war
against insurgency and terrorism and the fight against corruption championed by
the newly elected president of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari.
Therefore, you are being alerted to check and confirm if your mobile phone line has been
duly registered to avoid abrupt disconnection. Security in Nigeria can become more efficient if all mobile
communication lines in use is duly registered and identity of owners well established.
This measure will checkmate such crimes that may be committed using mobile
phones as most Nigerians had
previously fallen victims to. An efficient national identity system is key to a
formidable national security.
However, for all users who may have been disconnected before
now, you still have the chance to reactivate your lines. According to the NCC, you may have your mobile phone line reconnected only when
you visit your network provider’s office and get your line properly registered
by supplying to them all details as prescribed. Nigeria is currently undergoing a positive revolution in
exterminating crime, insecurity and corruption.
Every Nigerian
needs to join the government to ensure that this is achieved. This is no fight
for the government and authorities alone because every individual’s security will definitely translate to a general an
effective public or national security. Let us help to make Nigeria more safe and secure.
